5 Tips for Designing a Website that Sells:

So you bought a domain name and purchased some web hosting.  You have even done a little research on how you will market your website. You have seen some websites you like and some you don’t like, maybe a few of them were your competitor’s.  So how do you make a website that is fun and easy for your customers to use and eventually makes you more money?  I have a few tips that can definitely help. But first lets talk a little about what user interface design is.

What is User Interface Design?

User interface design is the process of using design tools to create an interface that is meaningful to the customers and this depends entirely upon where and when they might use it. The layout of text, images, video and other content all work together to tell your story and help customers get what they want. Websites are a great way to give your customers easier access to your business at their convenience. Your website should be fun and easy to use. Practicing good web user interface design will definitely make a difference in the online relationships you have with your customers.

The Grocery Store Example

My favorite way to think about web user interface design for your business is to compare it to any other real world business transaction.  Luke Wroblewski, previously the Chief Design Architect (VP) at Yahoo! Inc, shares a comparison of the grocery store interface example in his book “Web Form Design”.  Costumers learn about the grocery products via marketing ads and this opens the relationship with them. They then engage with the grocery store by visiting it and finding the products they want or need and add some to their shopping cart.  Finally they close the deal by checking out and purchasing the products they want with the assistance of a, hopefully smiling, store clerk.
