Samsung's 'Liquid Crystal' design has become ever so popular on the flat panel television range. It mixes the glossy black finish with a touch of wine red and an amazing pattern setting which is brighter in some places and darker in others —giving it a natural feel. Now this finish has arrived on Samsung's latest notebook—the R480. And this forces almost everyone to stop for a moment, breathe and take in the new laptop finish. The lid is bordered with black while the centre has a wine red finish. The two colours merge very well here, as well as throughout the notebook. The only bad part about this kind of a finish is that it is very glossy—fingerprint magnet, will get scratched very easily and require a dust cleanup every now and then.
On paper, the specs look good with Intel's new Core i3 processor 330M that clocks at 2.13GHz and is paired with 4 GB to RAM and comes with a 320 GB hard drive. Windows 7 Home Premium is in the 32-bit avatar and the graphics are handled by Nvidia's GeForce 310M graphics. In terms of performance, the benchmarks indicate that we have a performance monster on our hands. The PC Mark score of 5641 is incredible, despite the fact that the 32-bit OS limits memory availability to 3 GB, instead of the on board 4GB installed. Open as many browser tabs as you want, play music in the background, let the antivirus do its own thing in the background and still have a lot of power left to use up if needed.
If you want to play an occasional game on this notebook, you won't be disappointed. The 3D Mark score of 3828 promises an extremely powerful gaming experience. You will start off with the occasional game, but become an avid gamer pretty soon. The 14 inch screen is extremely good—vivid colours, sharp display and does not hurt the eyes like some overtly done up displays do. A 14-inch screen size also means that the laptop can be carried around easily as well. Since the laptop will be used on the move quite a bit, the battery life will be critical. Its backup of 3 hours is extremely good, considering the fact that the machine is so powerful. Tone down the power settings a bit, and the backup time will increase. Also, turn the laptop upside down and there are the battery charge status indicators. All lit up means full charge and and as they start switching off, this means that the battery backup is reducing.
The R480 is quite well built. There are no creaks, and it feels solid to hold and use. The touchpad has 4 LED indicators on its 4 edges, which lends an edgy touch to the look. There are 3 USB ports, one E-Sata, optical drive, HDMI out as well as a memory card reader. At a price of Rs 40k, the R480 does make a lot of sense for someone who needs a stylish yet powerful laptop without having to pay an arm and a leg for it.
For approximately this price, you can check out the Dell Inspiron series as well as the HP Pavilion DM3 notebooks. The Dell will however cost a bit more with the graphics card upgrade and the DM3 looses out on an internal optical drive in the race to keep very slim
